๐ŸŒŠ Vacation week idea

A little San Diego coast day?

Coffee in Del Mar, ocean views, seals and sea lions in La Jolla, tide pools if the timing works, casual food, and absolutely no forced-march vacation nonsense.

Del Mar coffee La Jolla Cove Seals + sea lions Tide pools Casual food Maybe Torrey Pines

Relaxed, pretty, and not over-planned

I was thinking we could do a coastal San Diego day during vacation week โ€” something easy and fun, with enough structure to make it smooth but not so much that it turns into a clipboard event.

The favorite version: leave after morning traffic, grab coffee in Del Mar, wander near the water, then head to La Jolla for ocean views, seals/sea lions, tide pools if low tide cooperates, and a casual meal somewhere good.

Best version

Del Mar coffee + La Jolla coast walk + animal watching + casual food.

Torrey Pines is optional. If the day already feels full, we skip it with honor and zero guilt.

What we might do

โ˜•Start in Del Mar

Coffee, a short ocean walk, and pretty views around Seagrove Park / Powerhouse Park.

๐ŸฆญSee the locals

La Jolla Cove and Children's Pool are good places to spot sea lions and harbor seals.

๐ŸฅพOptional nature walk

If we're feeling it, Guy Fleming Trail at Torrey Pines is short, scenic, and very ocean-view friendly.

A gentle itinerary

9:30 AM
Leave Mission Viejo
Late enough to miss most morning traffic, early enough to still have a real day.
10:30-ish
Arrive in Del Mar
Coffee or light breakfast, then a simple walk near Seagrove Park / Powerhouse Park.
11:30 AM
Drive toward La Jolla
Short hop south. Find parking near the Cove or village and begin the coastal wander.
12:00โ€“1:30
La Jolla coast walk
Cove, Coast Boulevard, Children's Pool, ocean views, seals/sea lions, and tide pools if the tide is right.
1:30โ€“2:30
Casual lunch
Something good but not fancy: tacos, seafood, Hawaiian/coastal, burgers, or whatever looks easy.
2:45โ€“4:00
Optional Torrey Pines
If we still feel energetic, do Guy Fleming Trail โ€” short, scenic, and not a serious hike.
4:00โ€“7:30
Flexible / linger
Coffee, ocean overlook, village stroll, Gliderport view, early dinner, or just staying out until traffic calms down.
7:30โ€“8:00
Head home
Better after the worst northbound traffic. We can always leave earlier if we're done.

Seals, sea lions, and tide pools

La Jolla is famous for wild harbor seals and sea lions. The simple plan is to walk around La Jolla Cove, Coast Boulevard, and Children's Pool / Casa Beach.

  • Sea lions are often around La Jolla Cove.
  • Harbor seals are often around Children's Pool.
  • Tide pools are best near low tide, so we should check the tide that morning.

Important animal etiquette

We admire the blorpy ocean dogs from a respectful distance and follow posted signs/barriers. Tracy gets the animal joy; we do not become a local news segment.

Torrey Pines, maybe

If we're up for a little nature walk, Guy Fleming Trail at Torrey Pines is the best fit: about a 2/3 mile loop, relatively easy, with ocean overlooks.

If parking is annoying or the La Jolla walk already scratched the itch, we skip it. The day does not need to prove itself.

Traffic strategy

Tuesday traffic is the goblin in the itinerary. Best bet:

  • Leave around 9:30 AM, after morning commute.
  • Avoid driving home northbound around 4:00โ€“6:30 PM if we can.
  • Either leave early afternoon or, better, linger for food/sunset and head home around 7:30โ€“8:00 PM.

We should check live maps the morning of and adjust like sensible adults pretending to be spontaneous.

Casual food ideas

Good, relaxed, not fancy. Pick based on where we are and how much waiting sounds tolerable.

Duke's La JollaCoastal/Hawaiian vibe, ocean view, casual but still feels special.
Puesto La JollaTacos/Mexican, lively, casual, easy vacation energy.
Cove HouseCasual and near the water โ€” good if we're already around the Cove.
The Taco StandVery casual, popular, simple. Zero fancy nonsense.
Board & Brew, Del MarUltra-casual sandwiches if we decide to eat in Del Mar.
The Cottage Del MarBreakfast/brunch option if timing and wait are reasonable.

The only real plan

Ocean, animals, coffee, casual food, good company, and permission to skip anything that starts feeling like too much.

That is the whole itinerary. Everything else is just scenery.
